Terceira, which can be translated as ‘Third’ in English, was named as such because it was the third island of the Azores to be discovered. It is also the third ranking island of the Azores Archipelago in terms of size, measuring 381.96 km2, with a length of 29 km and a width of 17.5 km, situated at 27º 12′ west longitude and 38º 40′ north latitude. It is the second most populated island in the Azores and it was first settled back at the end of the first half of the 15th century. Throughout its history, it has been the setting for various famous moments in history, traces of which can be seen in its monuments, museums, and architecture and which led to the city of Angra do Heroísmo being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
