With a privileged location in the middle of the Atlantic, between latitudes 38º and 33º north and longitudes 28º and 38º west, Faial Island, with an area of 173.42 km2 spread over 21 km in length and 14 km in width, was discovered in the first half of the 15th century and populated before 1460.
