Small in size and graceful in its landscapes, Graciosa Island, which measures 61.66 km2 in area spread over 12.5 km in length and 8.5 km in width, is the second smallest island of the Azores Archipelago and is located at 28º 05′ west longitude and 39º 05′ North latitude. It is believed to have been discovered sometime in the late first half of the 15th century and settled soon afterwards in the middle of that century. The tranquility and apparent simplicity of its landscapes of hills and vineyards enclosed in basalt walls, dotted with white country houses, lends grace to this small island.
