The island of Santa Maria is located in the Atlantic, at 28º 08′ west longitude and 37º 43′ north latitude, with a surface area of 97,42 km2, distributed over an area 17 km long and 9.5 km wide. Santa Maria was the first Azorean island to be discovered by Portuguese caravels, at the beginning of the 15th century, and its settlement is estimated to have begun a few years after the year 1427, which is when it is understood that livestock was first brought to the island. It is famous for its beaches and bays, its white houses, and the stone corrals, in stairways, of its vineyards.
