The island of São Jorge with its elongated shape measures 56 km in length by only 8 km in width and has a total area of 246.25 km2. It is probably the most central island in the Azores Archipelago, located at 28º 33′ west longitude and 38º 24′ north latitude. The date of its discovery is unknown, but we know that the first references to this island date back to 1439 and that in 1443 it was already inhabited. Seen from the sea, it looks more like a plateau that stretches into the sea with a predominantly steep coastline, which, at certain points, slopes down to flat areas where the famous “fajãs” have been formed.
