Located at 28º 20′ west longitude and 38º 30′ north latitude, the island of Pico is the second largest of the Azores, with an area of 447 km2. Along its 42 km in length and 15.2 km in width, the island skirts Mount Pico, the mountain that gives it its name and the highest mountain in Portugal, which has an altitude of 2351 m and whose outline overlooks all the islands of the Central Group. Its actual date of discovery is unknown, but it is understood that it began to be inhabited around 1460. Pico, the island of whalers and the black basalt of the mountain and the stone corrals of the vineyard landscape, is a UNESCO world heritage site and a volcanic island where certain “Mistérios” (mysteries) have given names to places.
