Located at 21º 59′ west longitude and 39º 25′ north latitude, the island of Flores is the most westerly of the Azorean islands: here, Europe both begins and ends. With a surface area of 143.11 km2 spread over 17 km in length and 12.5 km in width, the abundance of flowers on the island surprised the first navigators to encounter it in around the year 1452, as well as the first people who inhabited it in 1470; so much so that it was the flowers that gave the island its name. Today it is still the island of the Azores that is most covered in flowers, but it is the beauty of its lagoons and waterfalls that fascinates its visitors, who look at it as a small paradise.
