Who

If you legally reside in the Azores and are a third-country national, you are guaranteed access to health care and medication assistance provided by the Regional Health Service.

How

By submitting a document proving your registration with the Health Center in your area of residence. If you haven’t registered with the Health Center, you must present a valid Portuguese residency document.

Costs

Health care tends towards being free of charge.

Moderate fees are payable, with the exceptions provided for by law, proof of which is provided by a document issued by the Health Center in your area of residence.

Who

If you are a national of one of the European Economic Area States (Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway or one of the 27 European Union states) or Switzerland, you are guaranteed access to health care and medication assistance provided by the Regional Health Service.

How

By applying for the following in your country of origin:

• European Health Insurance Card (EHIC or Provisional Substitute Certificate);

• Portable document S1 or forms E 106, E 109 or E 121.

Costs

In the absence of a document proving entitlement to the benefit, a charge will be made for health care.
You can request a refund from the institution in your country of origin.

Who

If you do not have a document as proof of right to remain, right to reside or a work visa, you are guaranteed access to the services and institutions of the Regional Health Service.

How

By presenting a document proving that you have been in Portugal for more than 90 days, issued by the Parish Council of your area of residence.

Costs

In this situation, you may be charged according to the current fee tables, with the exception of health care for conditions that endanger public health, maternal health and vaccines included in the regional vaccination program. These situations should take into account the specific aspects of each case, specifically regarding the person’s economic and social situation, to be ascertained by the social services of your area of residence.

Who

Underage children are guaranteed access to health care.

How

By the registration of underage children with the High Commission for Migration. An ID is issued that is valid for two years and can be renewed.

Costs

Free of charge as long as the underage children are registered.
